PKP PLK is planning to build a railway line to a planned Mazury Airport in Szymany and to the existing local traffic control centre located at this route. The investment may cost as much as PLN 60m (€14.2m), according to PAP.
The planned rail link will be 1.6 km in length. It will enable travellers to reach Szymany airport from Olsztyn. The airport is to be finished and ready to operate by 2015. The construction work will start shortly and cost around PLN 200m (€47.3m). An EU subsidy will cover 76% of the cost of the undertaking.
The investor intends to apply to the authorities of Warminsko-Mazurskie voivodship for EU funding for the railway investment. PKP PLK will then call a tender to choose a contractor for the undertaking and the construction work is scheduled to get under way in the autumn of 2014. The project is to be completed by 2015.
A 55 km fragment of the line between Olsztyn and Szymany station via Szczytno has so far been completed. The project to renovate the Olsztyn-Szymany airport line as a whole will require an estimated budget of PLN 115m (€27.2m), PLN 68m (€16.1m) of which will come from an EU subsidy.
