Up to 1,890 MW in renewable energy projects to be activated in Kazakhstan by 2020

In recent years, the development of renewable energy projects has become a hotly debated topic in Kazakhstan. In 2009 the government approved a law designed to support the use of renewables. In addition, the Expo-2017 exhibition, which is to be held in Astana, will use the slogan “Future Energy”, thus increasing Kazakhstan’s awareness of renewables in the coming years.
In accordance with the on-going state programme for the development of renewable energy in Kazakhstan, it is envisaged that more than half of the energy consumed in the country will have come from RES projects by 2050, although this proportion is expected to increase to about 3% by 2020. At present, Kazakhstan’s renewable energy potential remains almost untapped.
