The 100 km gas pipeline between the Romanian town of Arad and the Hungarian town of Szeged has been completed. The project serves to create a link between the gas transmission systems of the two countries. MOL provided funding of HUF 9bn (€31.5m) for the Hungarian section of the pipeline through its subsidiary, FGSZ Foldgazszallito, and the Romanian section was financed by Transgaz, which provided €35m.
Plans to build the link continued for 10 years, before the contract was finally signed in 2008. The gas pipeline runs from Arad to Szeged alongside the E68 roadway: the Hungarian section of the pipeline is 47 km long, and the Romanian 61.7 km. It has an annual capacity of 1.75 billion m³ and currently flows to Romania, but may be bidirectional in the future. Testing has been completed, and the handover is expected in early September. The Romanian company Petrom will be the first to import gas through the new facility.
