Competition regulator approves Tarmac’s takeover

2010-08-31

The Czech Republic Office for the Protection of Competition (UOHS) approved the takeover of the building material firm Tarmac CZ by the construction company Eurovia. The sale was allowed with the condition that Tarmac would sell three of its quarries in northern and western Czech Republic where the deal would give Eurovia a dominant position on the stone market, Casopis Stavebnictvi reported.
The UOHS started to look into the deal in June 2010 after the European Commission returned the case to the Czech regulator. Eurovia specialises in construction and maintenance of road and rail infrastructure and in the production of building materials. Tarmac, among other things, manufactures and sells crushed stone from quarries. In February, the two companies agreed on Eurovia buying part of Tarmac in Germany, Poland, France and the Czech Republic.
Tarmac is the subsidiary company of the firm Anglo American. Eurovia is part of the French constructor Vinci, which specialises in road and railway infrastructure projects. Tarmac CZ controls 13% of the stone market in the Czech Republic. It employs 280 people and its yearly output reaches over six million tonnes of stone and sand.
