The new terminal of the state-owned Bratislava airport, which has an annual capacity of 3.5 million passengers, was formally opened on 9 June 2010 after 18 months of construction work.
The opening of the new terminal will be followed by the reconstruction of the existing 40-year-old terminal at the airport, which is expected to last until February 2012. With the new terminal in place, Bratislava airport now has an annual passenger capacity of five million. The total cost of the construction of the new terminal and the reconstruction of the old facility will be €96m, according to the airport’s management.
The construction of the new terminal was carried out by ZIPP Bratislava. The same company will carry out the reconstruction work on the existing terminal. The government contributed €69.7m to this project, with the remainder of the cost covered by the airport’s budget.
Bratislava airport had 1.7 million passengers in 2009, which was a 23% year-on-year reduction. The airport expects to serve the same number of passengers in 2010. 287,000 passengers passed through the airport during the first quarter of this year, 5% fewer than the corresponding period of 2009.
