A French group Lafarge, the largest player on the Romanian cement market, estimates that it will report an increase in sales volume of up to 5% in 2010 against last year. In 2009 the company suffered a significant decline in its turnover of more than 34% year on year as a result of declining demand for building materials.
Lafarge had sales revenues of €242.8m in 2009, the first year when Lafarge saw its profit shrink in Romania. Last year, the Romanian cement market dipped by 30% year on year in terms of sales. In 2008, Lafarge Ciment was the fifth most profitable company in Romania, with a profit of €163.9m.
Lafarge Group entered the Romanian market in 1997. The company owns cement factories in Medgidia and Hoghiz, and a grinding unit in the town of Targu-Jiu.
