The mortgage market in the Czech Republic is more-or-less frozen, according to an analysis published by Hospodarske Noviny. In January 2010, banks in the Czech Republic concluded the smallest number of mortgages in the country’s recent history. 2,533 mortgages in total, worth a CZK 4.28bn (€165.9m) in total, were sold during this month. They are, therefore, worth 30% less than those of December 2009, a 7% reduction in comparison with January 2009.
Banks have reduced interest rates to attract customers. However, the customers have to meet a set of strict conditions to qualify for the low rates.
