Bulgarian construction sector shrinks

Employment in the
Bulgarian construction sector in 2009 reached 178,991 people, according to preliminary data of Bulgaria’s National Statistics Institute. The public construction sector employed 5,821, while the private sector employed 173,170. The average annual salary in the construction industry was BGN 6,535 (€3,334). At the end of December the construction industry employed 160,102 under labour contracts, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 18.1% and the average monthly salary was BGN 552 (€281.6).
