51 solar energy plants under construction in Romania
2012-01-19
51 solar power projects were being built in Romania in January 2012, and thought to be pulling in investments of €500m between them, according to information from Transelectrica, an electricity distributor.
After substantial investments in wind farms in Romania in 2010 and 2011, solar energy is expected to be the next to take off. The main drivers of an increase in the number and value of solar energy projects are the lower cost of the required equipment and a package of government financial incentives for the developers of solar projects.
The 51 solar energy plants being built in Romania have an combined capacity of approximately 210.3 MW. Of these, 14 plants with a combined capacity of 61 MW are due to become operational in 2012. The amount invested in these plants is estimated by Transelectrica to be €150m. Four of the 14 projects are being built in the county of Prahova, two in each of the counties of Timis, Olt and Dolj, and one each in the counties of Gorj, Dambovita, Braila and Botosani.
